6 Ways to Never Get Guest Complaints and Earn 5 Stars (Episode 574)

The best way to handle a bad review is to prevent the frustration before it ever reaches the guest.

Airbnb five-star reviews do not come from luck. They come from preventing the small guest frustrations that can turn an otherwise good stay into a complaint.

When a guest leaves a less-than-five-star review, most hosts want to defend themselves.

That reaction makes sense.

However, defensiveness does not help you earn better reviews. Prevention does.

In most cases, guest complaints come from small moments of friction that hosts can fix before check-in. For example, a guest may struggle to find the door. The Wi-Fi may fail. The bed may feel uncomfortable. Basic supplies may run out. Or, they may face a parking issue you could have warned them about.

Fortunately, most of these fixes are simple.

They do not require a full redesign or a huge budget. Instead, they require you to think through the stay from the guest’s point of view.

Here are six ways to prevent complaints and earn more Airbnb five-star reviews.

1. Make Check-In Instructions Clear

Guests usually arrive excited, but they also arrive a little nervous. At Thanks for Visiting, we call this feeling “nervcited.”

They hope the home looks like the photos. At the same time, they want to park in the right place, find the right door, use the lock, and get inside without needing to message you.

So, remove the guesswork before they arrive.

Your check-in instructions should explain:

  • Where to park
  • Which door to use
  • How the lock works
  • What to do if the gate, driveway, or entrance has a quirk
  • What changes if they arrive after dark

However, clear does not mean overwhelming. A guest sitting in the car after a long drive does not want a 10-paragraph message. Instead, they want the right details in the right order.

Here is a simple test: give your check-in instructions to a blunt friend. Then, ask them to find the property and get inside without your help.

Even better, have them do it in the dark.

If they get confused, your guests probably will too.

2. Make Sure the Wi-Fi Works

Reliable Wi-Fi is one of the easiest ways to protect Airbnb five-star reviews.

It is not a bonus anymore.

It has to work.

After all, guests need Wi-Fi to work remotely, stream shows, look up directions, send photos, and share their trip. When the Wi-Fi fails, the issue feels bigger than one small inconvenience. Instead, it makes the whole property feel unreliable.

That is why Wi-Fi should be part of your turnover process.

Before each stay, check that the TV is connected. Next, make sure the apps work. Then, run a speed test. Finally, confirm that the guest can connect easily when they arrive.

Also, do not assume they can “just use 5G.” You promised Wi-Fi, so own that part of the stay.

As a small hosting detail, consider using your Wi-Fi password as guest-experience messaging. For example, a password like “fivestarstay” or “happyguest” sets the tone from the moment they arrive.

3. Invest in Quality Where It Counts

You do not need to buy the most expensive version of everything.

However, quality matters in three key places:

  • Where guests sleep
  • Where guests sit
  • What guests cook with

First, start with sleep. A bad night of sleep can ruin a stay, and it is hard to recover from that kind of complaint.

To make the sleep experience feel more intentional, add real blackout shades, not just light-filtering curtains. In addition, offer firm and soft pillows. Keep extra blankets nearby. You can also consider a sound machine.

These details do not need to be complicated. Still, they can turn an average stay into one guests remember.

Next, look at the kitchen. Warped pans, dull knives, and loose handles make cooking frustrating. As a result, the kitchen becomes a problem guests have to work around instead of a selling point.

Buy nice, or you will buy twice.

Maybe even thrice.

4. Stock Supplies Generously

Generous supplies can help protect Airbnb five-star reviews because they prevent a bad first impression.

Supplies are not just “starter supplies.”

You are in the hospitality business. Therefore, a guest should not arrive for a week-long stay and immediately need to buy toilet paper, trash bags, dish soap, paper towels, or laundry detergent.

Think about the guest who arrives late after a long flight or a long drive. They want to shower, unpack, start a load of laundry, and settle in. Instead, they are forced to go back out because the home only has one trash bag.

Generous supplies will not ruin your profit margin.

On the other hand, a review that says the guest ran out of basics can cost you much more.

5. Add a “Forgot Something” Basket

A “forgot something” basket gives guests the small items they may have left at home.

Think about the hotel front desk. If a guest forgets a toothbrush, they can call down and ask for one.

However, your short-term rental does not have a front desk.

So, create one.

Stock a small basket with useful items like:

  • Toothbrushes
  • Toothpaste
  • Razors
  • Mouthwash
  • Q-tips
  • Sunscreen
  • Other easy-to-forget basics

Of course, guests may not use anything in the basket. That is fine.

The point is that they see it and feel cared for. In other words, it tells them, “We thought about what you might need before you arrived.”

Because of that, this detail often shows up in reviews.

And if you worry that someone will take everything, remember this: you offered it to them. Even if one guest clears out the basket, the cost is small compared to the value of a great review.

6. Communicate Before There Is a Problem

Proactive communication is one of the simplest ways to earn Airbnb five-star reviews.

Your guest does not know your neighborhood the way you do.

So, share the details they need before those details become a problem.

When street cleaning is scheduled, message them before they park. For a marathon, road closure, festival, or construction nearby, send a heads-up before they end up stuck in traffic. If there is a better route, include it.

This kind of message changes the guest experience.

For one guest, it feels like you looked out for them. For another, it feels like you let them walk into a problem you already knew about.

The only difference is communication.

Ultimately, proactive hosting does not mean bothering your guest. It means sharing useful information at the right time.

Airbnb Five-Star Reviews Start Before Check-In

Airbnb five-star reviews do not come only from fixing problems after they happen.

Instead, they come from preventing the problems you can see coming.

Clear check-in instructions remove confusion. Reliable Wi-Fi keeps guests connected. Quality beds, seating, and kitchen tools protect the parts of the stay guests use most. Generous supplies prevent annoying store runs. A “forgot something” basket makes guests feel considered. Finally, proactive communication helps them avoid friction before it affects the trip.

None of these details are complicated.

Together, though, they create a stay that feels easy, thoughtful, and worth five stars.
