How intentional photo naming supports search alignment, accessibility, and long-term listing performance.
When hosts think about SEO, they usually focus on titles, descriptions, and amenities—but images play a role too. In this Hosting Hotline episode of Thanks for Visiting, Sarah and Annette answer a listener question about whether renaming Airbnb photos with keywords actually improves search visibility.
The short answer? Yes—but not in the way most hosts think.
SEO Is About Matching Search Behavior
Airbnb has made it clear they’re focused on matching listings to guest intent. That means guests aren’t searching for hype-driven adjectives like “luxury” or “stunning.” They’re searching for concrete features:
- Walk to downtown
- King bed
- Hot tub
- Pet friendly
- Near convention center
Renaming your images using these types of descriptors helps reinforce what your listing actually offers—especially when those terms reflect repeatable, predictable search patterns in your market.
Why Image Names Matter
By default, photos uploaded from cameras or phones are labeled with random identifiers. When those images are uploaded to Airbnb, VRBO, or your direct booking site, that data can still be read by platforms and search engines.
Renaming an image from something like H58A1972.jpg to king-bedroom-blackout-curtains.jpg gives platforms clearer signals about the content of the image—and helps align your listing with relevant guest searches.
Accessibility Is Part of the Equation
Image naming isn’t just about SEO. It also supports accessibility. Screen readers and image crawlers rely on readable descriptors to explain visuals to users who can’t see them. Clear, descriptive naming improves the experience for all users while reinforcing clarity for search platforms.
What This Will—and Won’t—Do
This strategy won’t magically boost your ranking overnight. It’s not a hack. SEO compounds over time as guests interact with your listing. Renaming photos is one small—but worthwhile—piece of a larger ecosystem that includes reviews, engagement, and listing accuracy.
A Word of Caution
Avoid keyword stuffing. Repeating the same keyword across every image will work against you. Algorithms are smart enough to detect it. Instead, describe what’s actually in the photo and how a guest would search for it—nothing more.
The goal isn’t to game the system. It’s to create clearer alignment between your listing, your amenities, and the guests actively searching for what you offer.
